Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 cup shredded pork, cooked and seasoned
  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • Soy sauce for dipping

Instructions:

In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast

Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and the yeast mixture

Knead the dough until smooth, then cover and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size

Punch down the dough and knead in baking powder, vegetable oil, rice vinegar, and sesame oil until well combined

Divide the dough into small balls and roll each into a flat circle

Place a portion of shredded pork in the center of each circle and seal the edges to form a bun

Place the buns on parchment paper in a steamer basket, leaving space between each bun

Steam for 15-20 minutes until the buns are fluffy and cooked through

In a small bowl, mix hoisin sauce with a bit of water to thin it out

Assemble the bao buns by spreading hoisin sauce inside each bun, then adding shredded cabbage, cilantro leaves, and additional shredded pork

Serve the Steamed Bao Buns with soy sauce on the side for dipping

Enjoy these delightful and fluffy bao buns filled with savory shredded pork!
